The Loire Valley is one of the most famous wine regions in France, with over 40,000 hectares of vineyards following the river as it flows west towards the Atlantic from Blois towards Nantes.
The Romans planted vines to make the most of the ideal climate, soil and handy waterway. By the Middle Ages, monks made Loire Valley wines the most highly-prized at the French and English courts. The aristocracy built many astonishing chateaux along the river in which to spend their summer holidays.
The Loire is most famous for its Chenin and Sauvignon Blanc, but there are many others including Muscadet, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Gamay. Likewise, it produces everything from the great value sparkling Crémant de Loire through elegant whites and reds to super-sweet dessert wines.
