This is the third vintage of Simpsons’ Roman Road Chardonnay and shows that this young vineyard can produce truly world-class Chardonnay. In 2012, Charles and Ruth Simpson purchased 30 hectares of prime viticultural land in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Kent. The land lies in a hilly valley at Barham, beside Canterbury, and their dream was to make the very finest English sparkling wine. But they are starting with an advantage, as they have been making wine at their Domaine Sainte Rose estate in the Languedoc since 2002.

Notes

Tasting Notes

The nose shows signs of beauty, with crisp citrus, white peach and green apples. It’s precise and Chablis-esque with delicious minerality, toasted oak, tangerine peel and spice. To taste, it’s the punchy, tangy orchard fruits upfront that grab your attention and makes your mouth water. But then, softer apricot stone fruit flavours and hints of tropical fruit envelope the crispness.

Vineyard

The Roman Road vineyard is on a south-facing slope, on the chalk and flint soils next to the Roman Road connecting Canterbury and Dover. The area is known as Gravel Castle; the former site of an ancient fort.

Winemaking

Pressed under inert gas to protect fruit, fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel, then aged in carefully-selected French oak barrels.
