Crafted by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, the Kloof Street wines represent balance, freshness and superb value. They are the perfect starting point for discovering Swartland wine and as much care goes into making them as Mullineux’s Single Terroir Syrahs and Chenin Blancs. The philosophy remains the same. You can produce an authentic expression of the Swartland through sustainable viticulture and restrained winemaking.
The wines are named after the street Chris and Andrea lived on in Riebeek-Kasteel when they started making their own wines. Originally renting vineyards and cellar space, they registered their Liquor Licence to their home address, or as Chris puts it – “effectively semi-legally bootlegging out of our garage”. They now make some of the most lauded wines in South Africa, with Kloof Street serving as a reminder of their modest beginnings.
The 2021 Kloof Street Rouge brims with beautiful dark berry fruit on both the nose and palate. This Swartland medley shows great balance, rounded with hints of holiday spice on the finish. Each variety in the blend adds depth to the wine – the Cinsault brings perfume, Tinta Barocca brings tannin, the Grenache brings fruit character, and the Syrah ties it all together.
