Matt Thomson of Blank Canvas makes the Ponte Pietra wines at the Cantina di Monteforte. The name references Verona’s ‘Ponte Pietra’ (stone bridge), which dates back to Roman times, although vines had thrived on the hills outside Verona long before this bridge spanned the Adige River.
The Ponte Pietra wines are fruit-forward and expressive. Fruit for this Merlot Corvina blend is sourced from vineyards situated next to the Soave zone in the Val d‘Alpone. The Merlot is grown on the warm, sheltered plains on clay soils, and the Corvina in the foothills on tufaceous basalt soils. All of the vineyards have excellent exposure, which helps to ensure complete ripeness.
This is a delicious blend in which the soft blackberry of the Merlot melds in harmony with the characteristic cherry blossom and ripe cherry pie character of Corvina. A fresh and well-balanced wine.
