We return to the winery which we first visited more than four years ago for the first ever wine featured on The Online Wine Tasting Club! Taking a Ute to Sydney and switching to a sailing boat, Fogg & Smith arrive in Nelson, New Zealand to visit Seifried.
Herman Seifried is an Austrian who migrated to New Zealand in the 1970s and took a little slice of Austria with him: Grüner Veltliner. And what a cracking food wine it is, with a waxy mouth feel and a touch of white pepper.
Now we've got to traverse the Pacific... but how can we do this in just a day, using something overly elaborate?!
Grüner Veltliner is the most widely planted white grape variety in Austria which is Hermann Seifried’s homeland. We were thrilled to nally be able to grow Grüner Veltliner here in New Zealand after it had passed through the long quarantine process. In 2008 chose Brightwater Vineyard to plant a small area of these very special vines. More recently have established Grüner Veltliner vines in the Edens Road vineyard.
2021 was another great season in the Nelson region, albeit very light yielding. The 2021 Seifried Nelson Grüner Veltliner is ripe and beautifully scented with tree ripened fig notes, white peach and hints of citrus blossoms. the palate is dry and generous with layers of soft succulent fruit, leaving a long lingering finish.
